Among the stalls of the ancient Nuremberg Christmas market it is possible to encounter the smell of cinnamon, cloves, and orange peel from the feuerzangenbowle, a traditional German drink, which can be literally translated as “punch with heated tongs,” referring to its characteristic preparation on an iron grater (Feuerzange), on which a block of sugar soaked in rum is burned, caramelizing and falling into the bowl of red wine below.
