A specially established academy of noble citizens from Gubbio promoted and financed the construction of the theater, starting in 1713. Smaller in size than the current one, it was inaugurated during the carnival of 1738. But structural problems soon emerged: from 1840 began a forty-year period full of works (reversal of the stalls/stage, construction of the atrium and adjoining rooms, erection of a new facade). The new theater was inaugurated in 1862: alongside structural works, decorations, finishes, and furnishings were executed by the leading artists of Gubbio (and beyond) of the time. Among them, the decorations of the hall by Raffaele Antonioli, the gilded metal chandelier with Bohemian crystal pendants. Declared unusable in 1961, it was put under restoration from 1975 and reopened to new life on March 24, 1985.
