The theater is located at the junction of three small squares: Plebiscito, San Francesco, and Mercato, and overlooks the town tower and the church of San Francesco. A “small theater” in Monteleone is mentioned in a document from 1834, later registered in the Gregorian cadastre as the municipal seat in 1918. In fact, the small theater is today part of the ambitious project of the Umbria Region aimed at the recovery and enhancement of historic theaters also in the smallest and most remote centers, testifying to their great vitality. In Monteleone, at the beginning of the 20th century, a drama society was established that kept the theater hall functional until the early years after World War II. In the mid-20th century, the hall was converted into a cinema named “Cin Cine” and inaugurated with the screening of the black and white film “Back to Sorrento” by Carlo Ludovico Bragaglia. The 1979 earthquake, which violently hit the eastern Apennine ridge of Umbria and particularly the Valnerina area, offered an opportunity for the recovery of the small theater, which at that time was already severely damaged and abandoned for about twenty years. The theater building is now returned to the community as a multipurpose hall for cultural activities, where the actual theater occupies the top of the three floors of the building. Equipped with eighty seats, it features a completely renovated interior devoid of the original architectural elements, definitively lost during the abandonment following the earthquake, such as the wooden gallery, a historic artifact typical of 19th-century theater design.
