In the center of Torgiano, a renowned wine-producing area between Perugia and Assisi, Palazzo Malizia hosts two collections dedicated to ceramic production by internationally acclaimed contemporary artists.

The Nino Caruso collection features works created by the Sicilian master from the 1950s to the present day and donated to the Municipality of Torgiano, to which the sculptor is deeply connected. The fifty-eight ceramic sculptures on display document the artist’s entire creative journey and provide valuable testimony to contemporary ceramic art. Vases, oil lamps, and steles evoke ancestral forms, archaic materials, and ancient civilizations, especially the Etruscan culture but also the African one.

The Designer Pottery collection, on the other hand, was established in 1996 concurrently with the Vaselle d’Autore event for the New Wine, whose artistic director is Nino Caruso himself. Continuing the activity of the ancient potters of Torgiano, every November three internationally renowned artists are invited to engage with the theme of vasella, a traditional Umbrian jug descending from the medieval “panata,” a vessel with a rim reminiscent of a pelican’s beak. At least three ceramics from each artist then become part of the collection, which today includes about one hundred and fifty works by forty-eight artists such as Accardi, Dorazio, Caruso, Mattiacci, Weller, Ceccobelli, Gallo, Heyerdahl, Jense, Consolazione, Scannella, Guerri, Morigi, Woodman, Laghi, Bucci, Brook, Gioventù
