The Contemporary Art Gallery of Pro Civitate Christiana is located in the historic center of Assisi, in Borgo San Pietro, just minutes from Piazza del Comune and the Basilicas of San Francesco and Santa Chiara.
Reopened to the public in 2005, the Gallery is housed in the headquarters of Pro Civitate Christiana, a lay association founded in 1939 by Don Giovanni Rossi with the aim of promoting Catholic culture in contemporary society.
The initial core of the collection was formed with works exhibited in the Christian art Solo Exhibitions starting from the post-war period. Subsequently, commissions on the iconography of Jesus the divine worker, competitions among artists and students of the Academies, as well as purchase prizes awarded at major national exhibitions for works on Christological subjects, have significantly expanded the collection. It includes works by De Chirico, Dottori, Carrà, Rosai, Tozzi, Menzio, Sassu, Fabbri, Pirandello, Greco, as well as the American artist William Congdon, to whom an entire section is dedicated.
The collection also includes Afro-Asian art, medals, small bronzes, stained glass windows, mosaics, and the rare complete series of 58 engravings of the Miserere by Georges Rouault.
