“The Museum of the city of Ugento was established on August 13, 1966, by resolution of the City Council, to house the numerous artifacts found in the city of Ugento and its vast territory. It was instituted by decree of the then President of the Republic Hon. Giuseppe Saragat, upon petition by Mayor Francesco Corvaglia, and inaugurated in October 1968 under the name: Civic Museum of Archaeology and Paleontology. Since its inception, the museum has been housed in the rooms of the former convent of the Observant Friars Minor, adjacent to the Church of Sant’Antonio, in the historic center of Ugento. In 2009, following a conservative restoration of the monumental complex, the New Archaeological Museum was inaugurated, after a rearrangement of the collections displayed in the civic museum, to which materials from other Salento sites were added.
