“Ugento City Museum was established on August 13, 1966, by resolution of the City Council to house the numerous artifacts found in the city of Ugento and its vast territory. It was established by decree of the then President of the Republic Hon. Giuseppe Saragat, on the petition of Mayor Francesco Corvaglia, and inaugurated in October 1968 under the name: Civic Museum of Archaeology and Paleontology. Since its inception, the museum has been located in the halls of the former convent of the Observant Friars Minor, attached to the church of Sant’Antonio, in the historic center of Ugento. In 2009, after a conservation restoration of the monumental complex, the New Archaeological Museum was inaugurated, following a reorganization of the items exhibited in the civic museum, to which materials from other sites in Salento were added.
