“Ugento City Museum was established on August 13, 1966, by a resolution of the City Council, to house the numerous artifacts from the city of Ugento and its vast territory. It was established by decree of the then President of the Republic Hon. Giuseppe Saragat, at the petition of Mayor Francesco Corvaglia, and inaugurated in October 1968 under the name: Civic Museum of Archeology and Paleontology. Since its inception, the museum has been located in the rooms of the former convent of the Observant Friars Minor, attached to the Church of Sant’Antonio, in the historic center of Ugento. In 2009, after a conservation restoration of the monumental complex, the New Archaeological Museum was inaugurated, following a rearrangement of the assets displayed in the civic museum, to which materials from other sites in Salento were added.
