The Museum is housed in the engine room of the Amolara pump house, a neoclassical-style building designed by engineer Cesare De Lotto in 1853 for the “drainage of the Lower Old Countryside consortium through hydraulic wheels powered by steam engines”.

After the pump house closed in 1992, it inevitably fell into disrepair until 1997 when Giuseppe Marangoni, director of the Turismo & Cultura cooperative, proposed to the Polesine Adige – Canalbianco Reclamation Consortium the reuse of the building by transforming it into a multifunctional center hosting a Museum of the history of water civilization, a laboratory for research in naturalistic engineering, a conference center, a tourist information office, and the Amolara Hostel to welcome visitors to the city of Adria and the Po Delta Natural Park.
