The Civic Museums complex groups the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Medieval and Modern Art. The museums are housed in the cloisters of the former convent of the Eremitani friars. Attached to the complex is the Scrovegni Chapel. The original core of the Civic Museums of Padua can be recognized in the rich collections that came to the state following the suppression of the Convent of San Giovanni da Verdara (1783) and other religious institutions (1810). In 1825, Abbot Giuseppe Furlanetto had arranged a collection of Venetian, Greek, and Roman inscriptions in the loggias of the Palazzo della Ragione, which was inaugurated by Francis I of Austria under the name Museum. Thanks to the commitment and passion of Andrea Gloria, artworks, private libraries and collections of Padua collectors, and old municipal magistrate documents became part of the municipal properties. Thus, the Art Gallery, the Library, and the Archive were formed, the latter transferred in 1948 to State authority.
