On the first floor of the western facade, along Via Pace, there is a small room where on July 11, 1859, just a few days after the Battle of San Martino and Solferino, Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary and Emperor Napoleon III of France met. Here the foundations were laid for the signing of the armistice and the subsequent peace that ended the Second Italian War of Independence.
The rooms, recently restored and reopened to visitors, have regained their original shapes and colors. On the ground floor, there is the small but precious Museum of the Risorgimento, which preserves original weapons, prints, and memorabilia belonging to the armies that fought the wars for the unification of Italy. Among the exhibited materials are documents and personal objects of citizens of Villafranca who enlisted in the ranks of the Garibaldians in 1859 and 1866, as well as a red jacket and a cap belonging to a volunteer of the Alpine Hunters.
