Arabba, a charming mountain village at 1,602 meters above sea level, nestled between Passo Pordoi and Campolongo at the foot of the Sella Group, offers unforgettable experiences not just in summer or winter (as you might expect), but also in autumn, that quieter, more intimate “in-between season” when the bustling summer crowds have gone and winter has yet to arrive. A magical moment in a magical place: in Arabba, dreams really do come true.
Arabba in autumn
Here, fall’s mild weather sets the stage for a spectacular display of vibrant colors—leaves turning from gold to deep red against a sky often perfectly clear and brilliantly blue. It’s an extra spectacle within the breathtaking Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage site, where the low-angled sun often bathes the mountains in shades of pink.
Spending a few days, maybe a long weekend, in Arabba during this season means experiencing this unique setting firsthand. Here are some suggested foliage walks in the area, perfect for admiring nature’s transformation.
1 Cherz Plateau
Along this trail, in addition to the changing colors, you can witness the “enrosadira” phenomenon, as pink hues tinge the peaks of Settsass at sunset.
2 Castello di Andraz
Why not take in some of the local culture while on holiday? Arabba and the Fodom Valley are full of simple yet fascinating tales from the past—for example, by visiting the romantic atmosphere of Castello di Andraz, symbol of the Livinallongo area. Among its most notable former residents is Nicholas of Cusa, a theologian, scientist, and one of the leading philosophers of his time. The fortress opens Thursday to Sunday in September and Friday to Sunday in October, allowing you to admire the fall colors inside an authentic medieval stronghold.

3 Pordoi Ossuary
From Passo Pordoi, this easy walk—suitable for all ages—takes just 45 minutes to reach the Ossuary, offering panoramic views over Arabba and the Fodom Valley, as well as the Tofane, Settsass, Col di Lana, and the crests of Porta Vescovo, at the foot of the Sella Massif.
4 Viel dal Pan
A local classic, worth tackling even in autumn to enjoy a landscape in transformation. Once used as a trade route (which is how it got its name), this well-marked trail, number 601, links Passo Pordoi to Porta Vescovo and offers breathtaking views over the Marmolada and Lake Fedaia. Local Alpine Guides call it the “Belvedere,” set between Marmolada and the Sella Group. Good to know: the Porta Vescovo cable car runs until Sunday, October 2.

5 Larzonei
This picturesque village, part of Livinallongo del Col di Lana and just a few kilometers from Arabba, is a peaceful spot surrounded by nature, where the sights, sounds, and scents of the forest will relax and inspire you. The views over the Fodom Valley and majestic Monte Civetta (3,220 meters) enhance the beauty of this place.
