The small church, with simple and clean exterior forms, features a single interior space ending at the back with a presbytery housing the sarcophagus of Enrico Scrovegni, created by Andriolo de Santi, and on the altar a Madonna with Child, a work by the 14th-century sculptor Giovanni Pisano. The chapel consists of a single hall measuring 20.5 x 8.5 m and 18.5 m in height with a barrel vault roof. The interior was frescoed by Giotto with the stories of Mary’s parents, Joachim and Anne, the Stories of the Virgin and Jesus, and on the counter-façade with the Last Judgment narrated in the Apocalypse. Additionally, fourteen monochrome allegories of the Vices and Virtues are painted on the high perimeter plinth. The entire decoration is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of art of all time.
