Palazzo Grimani Museum, Venice

Palazzo Grimani was renovated and modified from an original medieval core during the sixteenth century, under the direction of Vettore and Giovanni Grimani, who between 1537 and 1540 commissioned the decoration of some rooms on the first noble floor to Giovanni da Udine and Francesco Salviati, exponents of the modern Mannerist movement.

After the death of his brother Vettore, who had become the sole owner, Giovanni built the two wings closing off the square courtyard, placing the oval staircase and the extraordinary coffered room with lantern there.

In these rooms of the palace, a new important cycle of decorations was commissioned, executed by, among others, Camillo Mantovano and the young Federico Zuccari, to provide a worthy setting for the renowned collection of statues, medals, ancient busts, books, and paintings.
