A rare testimony in Italy of its kind, the Civic Museum of River Navigation in Battaglia Terme was established with the aim of bringing to light an important page of history by reviving and showcasing the valuable work of professionals connected to the river such as boatmen, horsemen, sand extractors, shipwrights, and millers. For many centuries, indeed, this town, thanks also to its location, was the hub of a vast network of river trade, and around the river a true civilization developed. The project began by collecting testimonies: from photos to various tools, until the late 1990s, when the museum itself was established. The exhibition path is spread over two floors and five rooms, each dedicated to a specific theme: room A illustrates the boats with their components and types; room B exhibits the tools used in shipyards for the construction and maintenance of boats; room C is dedicated to waterways with hydrographic maps and other artifacts related to water routes; room D covers the evolution over the years of propulsion devices; room E closes the exhibition with a section dedicated to life on board and its objects.
