The museum is dedicated to the famous Roman shipwreck and its cargo, recovered in the waters of the archipelago.
The ship, which sank near the island of Spargi around 120 B.C., was carrying a cargo of hundreds of wine amphorae and Campanian tableware.
The remains of the equipment on board and the crew provide interesting data about the organization of Roman naval trade, while the shipwreck represents a chronological milestone for the production and export of many types of objects.
A central element of the exhibition is the life-size reconstruction of the cross-section of the Spargi ship’s hull, with 202 amphorae, exemplifying the stowage system.
Also notable are the lead anchor weights and other materials, coming from the waters of the archipelago.
