The museum is dedicated to the famous Roman shipwreck and its cargo, recovered in the waters of the archipelago.
The ship, which sank near the island of Spargi around 120 BC, was carrying a cargo of hundreds of wine amphorae and Campanian-made tableware vessels.
The finds from the ship’s equipment and crew provide interesting data on the organization of Roman naval trade, while the wreck constitutes a chronological cornerstone for the production and export of many classes of objects.
The centerpiece of the exhibit is the life-size reconstruction of the cross-section of the Spargi ship’s hull, with 202 amphorae, illustrating the stowage system.
Also remarkable are the lead anchor stocks and other materials, coming from the waters of the archipelago.
