The museum is dedicated to the famous Roman shipwreck and its cargo, recovered in the waters of the archipelago.
The ship, which sank near the island of Spargi around 120 BC, was carrying a cargo of hundreds of wine amphorae and tableware from the Campania region.
The remains of the ship’s equipment and crew provide interesting data on the organization of Roman maritime trade, while the wreck serves as a chronological milestone for the production and export of many classes of objects.
The central element of the exhibit is a life-size reconstruction of the cross-section of the Spargi ship’s hull, with 202 amphorae, illustrating the stowage system.
Also remarkable are the lead anchor stocks and other materials, coming from the archipelago waters.
