Currently, the museum houses about 150 slabs of ornamental rocks from various regions of Italy; the collection is complemented by photographic, cartographic, and illustrative materials on mining techniques, quarries, stratigraphic sequences, and more. The Museum’s goal is to offer as comprehensive a panorama as possible of the main commercial varieties of Italian ornamental rocks.
Regarding their nomenclature, it was considered appropriate to maintain the commercial denomination which, although not without ambiguities, remains the best known. The Museum aims to support educational activities for students enrolled in Environmental and Land Engineering, Geology, and Architecture degree courses.
