Currently, the museum has about 150 slabs of ornamental rocks from various regions of Italy; all of this is supplemented by photographic, cartographic, and illustrative material on cultivation techniques, quarries, stratigraphic series, and more. The purpose of the Museum is to offer the most complete possible overview of the main commercial varieties of Italian ornamental rocks.
Regarding their nomenclature, it was deemed appropriate to maintain the commercial designation which, although not without ambiguities, is the most well known. The Museum aims to support education for students in the Degree Courses in Environmental and Territorial Engineering, Geology, and Architecture.
