The Museum of the History of Medicine in Rome, founded in 1938 by Adalberto Pazzini, houses a rich collection of objects of historical-medical interest, many of which are originals, that allow the reconstruction of the evolution of medical knowledge from prehistory to genomic medicine.

The Museum, designed for educational and outreach purposes, is equipped with interactive video and multimedia supports that allow visitors to deepen their understanding of the key themes in the history of medicine, biomedicine, and the relationships between biomedical sciences and society, complementing the teaching of the history of medicine and bioethics for both primary and secondary schools as well as at the university level. The museum route is spread over three floors.

The basement floor hosts environment reconstructions: the apothecary’s shop and the alchemist’s workshop. The first floor offers a journey from prehistory to the 17th century, illustrating the medicine of ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean basin and the Middle Ages. The second floor describes the transition from experimental medicine to the recent challenges of biomedicine, genomic medicine, and related technological applications.
