MARCA, established in March 2008, is a multifunctional museum hub where different artistic expressions coexist, from ancient art to contemporary language. The museum is located in the premises of an old building which, before the restoration works aimed at completely renewing the venue to host the mentioned museum, housed an institute for the deaf and dumb as well as a printing house. The building is situated in the historic center of Catanzaro and is organized over three levels. It is surrounded by a garden and courtyard, while a large terrace offers a view over the city panorama. The current museum exhibition, inaugurated in 2008, is divided into three areas and features a significant collection of works dating from the 16th to the 20th century, along with pieces from the Rotella Foundation, named after one of the greatest masters of the past century, the Catanzaro-born Mimmo Rotella. On the ground floor, the Provincial Art Gallery and Plaster Cast Gallery are set up with about 120 works including paintings and sculptures. The first floor houses the permanent Rotella collection and rooms dedicated to temporary exhibitions. The basement hosts the multipurpose center for contemporary culture.
