Il MARCA, born in March 2008, is a multifunctional museum center where different artistic situations can coexist, from ancient art to contemporary language. The Museum is located in the premises of an old palace which, before the restoration interventions (aimed precisely at completely renewing the site to host the aforementioned museum), housed an institute for the deaf and a printing house. The palace is situated in the historic center of Catanzaro and is organized on three levels. The building is surrounded by a garden and courtyard while a large terrace offers a view of the cityscape. The current museum exhibition inaugurated in 2008 is divided into three environments and consists of a significant heritage of works dating between the 1500s and the 1900s, to which are added those of the Rotella Foundation named after one of the greatest masters of the past century, the Catanzaro native Mimmo Rotella. On the ground floor, the Pinacotheca and Gipsotheca of the Province have been set up with about 120 works including paintings and sculptures. On the first floor are the permanent Rotella collection and the rooms dedicated to temporary exhibitions. The basement houses the multipurpose center of contemporary culture.
