The Civic Art Gallery was, in fact, established within the city’s historic museum, inaugurated on June 18, 1882. The prestigious collection displays paintings and sculptures of great interest spanning a chronological range from the 15th to the 20th century, acquired by the old city museum through legacies, donations, and purchases. Among the original collection, whose extent is known through archival records, were the famous panels by Antonello da Messina depicting the Apparition of the Angels to Abraham and Saint Jerome Penitent, acquired in 1882 from the Rota family, a unique piece in Calabria regarding the works of the Sicilian master.
