Founded in 1960, the Civic Museum of Maglie was moved in 1999 to its current location, a splendid early 20th-century residence which, together with the Municipal Library, forms the city’s cultural complex called the Alca. The only museum in southern Italy exclusively dedicated to the reconstruction of prehistoric scenes of the entire Salento territory, in the new location it has enhanced several disciplinary sectors such as the territory’s geology and human evidence from the protohistoric era. Recently added to these now classic sections is the ethnographic section, rich in precious African art objects. Equipped with spaces for educational activities, small events, and temporary exhibitions, the Museum of Maglie is characterized by its educational services that annually attract school groups from outside Salento, university groups, and scholars in the field, and also offer themed excursions in the area for tourist and association groups.
