In the historic center of Latiano, in the beautiful rooms of Palazzo Imperiali, the Municipal Art Gallery is set up, established in 2004, which houses the “Imperiali Picture Gallery”; a collection of large 18th-century Neapolitan canvases and works by young contemporary Salento artists. Located at the center of Piazza Umberto I, the town’s main square, embellished during the Fascist period by a fountain, the Castle or Palazzo Imperiali possibly dates back to the 12th century. Renovated several times until its current appearance (1714, as recorded in some inscriptions on the façade); the Palace became property of the Municipality after its transfer by Marquis Guglielmo Imperiali in 1909, the last descendant of the Francavilla family. In the 1980s/1990s the Castle also hosted municipal offices; today it houses the Municipal Library, the Civic Art Gallery, and the Archaeological Documentation Center. The adjoining Chapel of the Addolorata, today the Church of the Immaculate Conception, was designed by Mauro Manieri, has a Greek cross floor plan and ribbed vaults with gilded stuccoes.
