Founded in 1960, the Maglie Civic Museum was moved in 1999 to its current location, a splendid early twentieth-century residence where, together with the Municipal Library, it forms the city’s cultural complex called l’Alca. The only museum in southern Italy exclusively dedicated to the reconstruction of prehistoric paintings of the entire Salento territory, it has strengthened some disciplinary sectors such as the geology of the territory and human evidence from the protohistoric period in its new location. Recently, the ethnographic section, rich in fine African art objects, has been added to these now classic sections. Equipped with spaces for education, small events, and temporary exhibitions, the Maglie Museum is characterized by its educational services which annually attract school groups from outside Salento as well, university groups, and researchers in the field, and also offer themed excursions in the territory for tourist and association groups.
