Founded in 1960, the Civic Museum of Maglie was moved in 1999 to its current location, a splendid early twentieth-century residence where, together with the Municipal Library, it forms the city’s cultural complex called l’Alca. The only Museum in southern Italy exclusively dedicated to the reconstruction of prehistoric maps of the entire Salento territory, in the new headquarters it has strengthened some disciplinary sectors such as the geology of the territory and the human evidence of the protohistoric era. To these now classic sections, the ethnographic section has recently been added, rich in valuable African art objects. Equipped with spaces for teaching, small events, and temporary exhibitions, the Museum of Maglie is characterized by its educational services that annually attract school groups also from outside Salento, university groups, and scholars in the field, and also offer themed excursions in the area for tourist and association groups.
