The collection is housed in the former Boccarini College, originally a 13th-14th century Franciscan convent featuring a double loggia cloister built in the 16th century.
Organized thematically across the three floors of the complex, the exhibition results from a comprehensive reorganization of the archaeological and historical-artistic material from the area.
The archaeological section, consisting mainly of artifacts from local excavations, provides a chronologically complete overview of Amelia’s history, from the pre-Roman period through the full Romanization of the town, up to the early medieval phase. Of notable interest is the bronze statue of the Roman general Nero Claudius Drusus, called Germanicus, armed and covered with a richly decorated cuirass, standing over 2.15 meters tall. Several inscriptions contribute to reconstructing the prosperous Romanization of the town, bearing witness to distinguished families of Amelia, including the Gens Roscia.
The art gallery, located on the second floor, preserves works from local churches and palaces. Besides the panel with St. Anthony the Abbot, a masterpiece by Pier Matteo d’Amelia, it houses works dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, a particularly flourishing period for the city. This is evidenced by the rich urban residences, including Palazzo Petrignani, owned by the municipality and visitable upon request, whose decorations are traditionally attributed to the Zuccari school.
