The Giuditta Brozzetti Artistic Hand Weaving workshop is located on Via Tiberio Bernardi, near the Sant’Angelo gate, in the center of Perugia.
It occupies the spaces of the 13th-century church of San Francesco delle Donne, one of the oldest Franciscan settlements in Italy. Built on the site where Saint Francis stayed, it owes its name to the fact that, in 1252, it was given to a community of Benedictine nuns.
The workshop was founded in 1921 by Giuditta Brozzetti, a prominent representative of female entrepreneurship in the Umbrian capital. The heirs maintain the tradition, producing fabrics and textiles with decorative motifs of medieval and Renaissance origin made with manual looms. Among the objects preserved in the workshop are three traditional four-harness handlooms dating from the 17th to 19th centuries, eight jacquard looms (patented by Vincenzi), two 17th-century looms for weaving the “Flame of Perugia” stitch, as well as drawings and cartoons that document the workshop’s production from its origins to today.
