The Museum of Mills and Marcite is located isolated in the rural context of the Valnerina, in a place called “Le Marcite” not far from Norcia.
The Museum of Mills and Marcite definitely deserves a visit both for the importance of the machinery and the preserved utensils inside, and for the peculiarity of the marcite ecosystem, unique throughout the central-southern Apennines.
The Museum of Mills and Marcite of Norcia was established in 2005 inside the Cecconi mill and features, through illustrative panels and typical objects, the history of the mills and marcite of Norcia. It also displays a cereal grinding machine still perfectly functional and placed in a setting that recreates the traditional mill furnishing with utensils recovered from the territory. From the museum’s location, it is then possible to walk or bike through the marcite meadows. This is a unique ecosystem throughout the central-southern Apennines created by the system of canals and locks built by Benedictine monks in the 5th-6th century to flood cultivable lands. With this irrigation system, which varies according to the seasons, the soil can be kept moist in summer and prevented from freezing in winter, thus making cultivation possible even in less favorable months.
