Let’s look at the ITA baggage regulations.
ITA hand luggage
Raise your hand if, on the eve of a trip, you are not struggling with the weight of your luggage? And it is precisely from this aspect that we want to start.
Hand luggage and liquids
Makeup (cosmetics), liquids, water and other beverages, soups, syrups, creams, lotions and oils, perfumes, sprays, gels (including hair gel and shower gel), contents of pressurized containers (including shaving foams, other foams, aerosols and deodorants), pastes (including toothpaste), mixtures of liquids and solids and any other product of similar consistency, cannot be carried by hand but must be checked in. The alternative is to use liquid makeup in the appropriate transparent bag, to be removed at the time of boarding. Containers must be max 100 ml. These rules apply on all aircraft and not only on flights ITA.
ITA hand luggage weight
For hand luggage, the weight limit is 8 kilograms (including handles, side pockets and wheels).

ITA hand luggage dimensions
You can bring into the cabin only one piece of hand luggage with a maximum weight of 8 kg which, including handles, side pockets and wheels, does not exceed the following dimensions: 55 cm in height, 35 cm in width, and 25 cm in thickness.
Check the dimensions and weight of your hand luggage with ITA Airways staff or at luggage measuring devices near the check-in counters, before boarding. Luggage of passengers who do not undergo or do not pass the check may not be accepted on board.
Ground staff will apply the label “not exceeding 36 cm in height, 45 cm in width and 20 cm in thickness” to small-sized luggage (Under the seat”) on all ITA Airways flights departing from National and International airports to any destination, except those operated with A330 aircraft.
To ensure greater comfort on board, in compliance with safety standards and overhead compartment capacity, in flights with a high occupancy rate, your hand luggage may be collected at the gate for loading in the hold. Ground staff will label the selected luggage and issue a receipt for its return to the passenger. This procedure is not provided for intercontinental flights.
WARNING: In several destination countries, there are restrictions on bringing certain items or equipment by passengers. In some cases, possession of these items may result in sanctions. For more information, passengers are encouraged to contact the consular authorities of the destination country to verify the possible existence of such restrictions before traveling.
Information regarding hoverboards: in the interest of the safety of our guests and employees, small vehicles powered by lithium batteries such as Airwheel, solowheel, hoverboard, minisegway, balance wheel, are not accepted either as carry-on or checked baggage.
ITA carry-on baggage: what is not allowed

The use of electronic cigarettes (E-Cigarettes), pipes, and electronic cigars is prohibited in the cabin. Lighters can be carried in the cabin only carried on the person.

How to transport liquids on ITA flights
The European Union and ENAC have adopted safety rules that limit the quantity of liquid substances carried in hand baggage beyond security checkpoints in airports and on board.
These measures apply to passengers departing from all airports within the European Union territory, including Norway, Iceland, and Switzerland, for any destination.
What is meant by liquids
The following substances are considered liquids: gels, pastes (for example, toothpaste), lotions, mixtures of liquid/solid substances, the contents of pressurized containers (for example, shaving foam), hair gels, beverages, soaps, jams, syrups, perfumes, shaving foam, aerosols, and other products with similar consistency. Starting from January 31, 2014 the new rules for transporting liquids to be carried in the cabin.
Which liquids are allowed on ITA flights
It is allowed to bring:
- a small amount of liquids inside carry-on baggage, contained in containers with a maximum capacity of 100 ml or equivalent (100 g). The containers must be placed in a transparent, resealable plastic bag, with a capacity not exceeding 1 liter or dimensions of about 18×20 cm, with a maximum of one bag per passenger;
- medicines and substances intended for specific dietary purposes, including baby food; proof of authenticity and the actual necessity to carry such items may be requested;
- liquids purchased at the duty-free shop of any airport or airline. Liquids bought duty-free must be sealed together with the receipt at the time of purchase in a security bag that can only be opened upon arrival at the destination.
- In case of a connecting flight at another airport, it is advisable to inform security so that the liquids can be resealed in a new security bag;
- All other liquids, aerosols and gels must be placed in checked baggage.
For more information, it is recommended to consult the departure airport’s website.
Food products
The food products of animal origin (meat, milk or products made from meat or milk) can carry pathogens responsible for infectious animal diseases. There are strict veterinary procedures and controls on the introduction of these products into the European Union. Travelers must present such products for official checks.
More information is available from local health authorities. Travelers arriving with small quantities intended for personal consumption from: Andorra, Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland are excluded.
ITA Baggage: checked baggage
Checked baggage, unlike hand luggage, follows different rates depending on the destination. ITA advises that it is important to attach a name tag with your contact details to be contacted in case of problems with your baggage. Cardboard boxes can be accepted as checked baggage provided they are labeled with a name, wrapped in cellophane, and within the maximum permitted dimensions. It is always advisable to place all baggage that differs from normal suitcases in appropriate containers or packaging to protect them during loading and unloading. For example, when transporting bicycles, the handlebars must be fixed laterally, pedals removed, and tire pressure reduced to zero. Passengers who have requested special assistance,holding a light fare, can purchase extra baggage saving up to 50% by calling the dedicated number the day before the flight departure.
ITA checked baggage weight
Depending on the travel class, the weight of checked baggage varies. ITA applies the following regulation:
- Light travel class: no baggage;
- Economy travel class: 1 bag with a maximum weight of 23 kilograms;
- Premium Economy travel class: 2 bags with a maximum weight of 23 kilograms each;
- Business travel class: 2 bags with a maximum weight of 32 kilograms each;
- Comfort travel class (Rome-Milan): 2 bags with a maximum weight of 23 kilograms each.
ITA checked baggage size
Each piece of baggage must have a maximum dimension of 158 cm (sum of height + width + depth).
ITA checked baggage: what is not allowed
ITA prohibits the transport in the hold of items considered dangerous for flight safety, such as: matches, lighters, Electronic Cigarettes (E-cigarettes), electronic pipes and cigars (these items are only allowed on the person) and spare lithium batteries and power banks.
ITA baggage: costs for excess baggage
For carry-on bags that exceed the allowed weight/dimensions or checked luggage in the hold, a surcharge per trip is required for the first bag. Let’s see what is meant by ITA excess baggage cost:
