The Air Museum is located inside Villa Zaborra, also known as the Castle of San Pelagio. The 14th-century tower, part of the defensive system of the Carraresi, dates back to 1340. From the 1600s onwards, the villa was built, and in the 18th century, it was completely renovated by the Zaborra Counts to better serve the agricultural functions it has always been dedicated to. In 1918, it was the base of the “La Serenissima” squadron, which departed from here for the Flight over Vienna under the command of Gabriele D’Annunzio. In 1970, the property, to save the villa full of family memories from decay, considered a transformation that would not alter its residential, agricultural, and hospitality functions. During that period, the villa underwent careful restorations and was rethought in its current functions mainly as a flight museum. Opened in 1980, a result of the commitment of the owners and Maria Fede Caproni, it traces the entire history of human flight centered on D’Annunzio’s enterprise; this flight is the main focus of the museum with rooms inhabited by the poet during 1917-1919. Surrounding rooms are dedicated to Leonardo, the Montgolfiers, the Wright brothers, Ferrarin, Lindbergh, Nobile, Balbo, Forlanini, Gagarin, and Armstrong. The tour concludes in the outdoor gardens housing numerous aircraft and military systems.
