The Air Museum is located inside Villa Zaborra, also known as the Castle of San Pelagio. The 14th-century tower, part of the Carrara defensive system, dates back to 1340. From 1600 onwards, the villa was established, which in the eighteenth century was entirely remodeled by the Zaborra Counts to better carry out the agricultural functions it has always been assigned. In 1918 it was the headquarters of the squadron “La Serenissima,” which departed from here for the Flight over Vienna under the command of Gabriele D’Annunzio. In 1970, the owners, to save the villa full of family memories from decay, considered a transformation that would not distort its residential, agricultural, and hospitality functions. During that period, the villa underwent careful restorations and was rethought in its current functions mainly as a flight museum. Inaugurated in 1980, the result of the commitment of the owners and Maria Fede Caproni, it retraces the entire history of human flight centered on D’Annunzio’s enterprise; the main part of the museum is dedicated to this flight with the rooms inhabited by the poet during 1917-1919. The “surrounding” rooms are dedicated to Leonardo, the Montgolfier brothers, the Wright brothers, Ferrarin, Lindbergh, Nobile, Balbo, Forlanini, Gagarin, and Armstrong. The tour ends in the external gardens that host numerous aircraft and war systems.
