The nobleman’s collection, including furniture, paintings, medals, tapestries, bronzes, and sculptures, expanded over the years with the addition of Renaissance works from suppressed or demolished religious buildings and collection groups from the Gallerie dell’Accademia and the Archaeological Museum. Since 1992, a new exhibition section dedicated to Venetian ceramics has found a place in the adjacent Palazzo Duodo.
The visit to the palace is not limited to the Gallery alone, which has been open to the public since 1927; the building still largely retains the structure of the ancient Venetian fondaco house. Of particular interest is the inner courtyard, featuring a striking floor mosaic made of ancient marbles, created by the baron himself as an evocation of early Christian basilicas, and the original wellhead sculpted by Bartolomeo Bon in 1427.
In the atrium – a symbolic guardian of the building and its fate – rest the ashes of Giorgio Franchetti beneath a porphyry monument.
