The Air Museum is located inside Villa Zaborra, also known as the Castle of San Pelagio. The 14th-century tower, part of the Carraresi defensive system, dates back to 1340. From the 1600s onwards, the villa was established and, in the 18th century, was completely renovated by the Zaborra Counts to better carry out the agricultural functions to which it has always been dedicated. In 1918, it was the headquarters of the squadron “La Serenissima” which set off from here for the Flight over Vienna under the command of Gabriele D’Annunzio. In 1970, the property, to save the villa full of family memories from degradation, considered a transformation that would not distort its residential, agricultural, and hospitality functions. During that period, the villa underwent careful restorations and was rethought for its current functions primarily as an aviation museum. Inaugurated in 1980, the result of the commitment of the owners and Maria Fede Caproni, it retraces the entire history of human flight, focusing on the D’Annunzio enterprise; the main part of the museum is dedicated to that flight, with the rooms inhabited by the poet during the period 1917-1919. Surrounding them are rooms dedicated to Leonardo, the Montgolfier brothers, the Wright brothers, Ferrarin, Lindbergh, Nobile, Balbo, Forlanini, Gagarin, and Armstrong. The path ends in the outdoor gardens, which host numerous aircraft and military systems.
