Numerous theatrical performances, folk dances, reviews of groups and musical bands, and a whole series of activities linked to the joy of living and the carefree spirit typical of the islanders are present. Tenerife is the jewel in the crown and there are several towns where one gets caught up in the joyful and carefree atmosphere of this period. For several days, confetti, streamers, feathers, and glitter flutter everywhere and run wild along the streets. The best-known on the island is the Santa Cruz Carnival, its capital.

The festival opens already on the Friday before Fat Tuesday with a spectacular parade announcing the festive days to come and reaches its climax in the evening when thousands of people in masks dance and have fun until dawn. Everything repeats itself every evening and ends on Ash Wednesday evening when the city’s inhabitants perform the ritual of the burial of the sardine, which officially marks the end of the carnival. But the burlesque spirit of the islanders resurfaces the following weekend, also known as the “pignatta”.

The carnival has its preview in major events including the election of its queen who is crowned during a spectacular competition attended by many amateur artists. The beauties running for queen parade wearing outfits born from the extravagant genius of the present designers. Another important event, for which all participants work the entire year, is represented by the Carnival formations.

Musical groups, extras, murgas, and rondallas rehearse and rehearse their performances so that they can give their best during the eagerly awaited days of joy and fun. In the past, General Franco had banned the celebration of Carnival throughout Spain because his people indulged in all kinds of transgression and euphoria, but the islanders of Tenerife managed to keep this tradition alive by turning it into Winter Festivals. The carnival celebrated in the tourist town of Puerto de la Cruz also plays a significant role. All inhabitants and tourists present get carried away in uninhibited dances and revelries of every kind.

The traditional vintage car rally is an event not to be missed, as is the amusing “Mascherina mettiti i tacchi” race or the election of the drag queen. The cuisine of the island deserves special mention, where the abundant and tasty Atlantic fish reigns supreme.

The meats are also tasty and delicate, the cheeses have a delicate and unique flavor, all seasoned with typical sauces made from local products, and the exotic fruit is rich and delicious. The restaurants combine tradition and creativity at affordable prices. The wines, with their intense flavor due to the richness of the lands, should not be underestimated.
