Numerous are the theatrical performances, popular dances, reviews of groups and musical bands, and a whole series of activities related to the joy of living and the carefree nature of the islanders. Tenerife is the flagship, and there are several towns where people get caught up in the joyful and playful atmosphere of this period. For several days, confetti, streamers, feathers, and glitter fly everywhere, going wild along the streets. The best-known event on the island is the Santa Cruz carnival, its capital.
The celebration begins already on the Friday before Mardi Gras with a spectacular parade announcing the festive days to come and reaches its climax in the evening when thousands of masked people dance and have fun until dawn. Everything repeats each evening and ends on Ash Wednesday night when the city’s inhabitants perform the ritual burial of the sardine, officially ending the carnival. But the burlesque spirit of the islanders resurfaces the following weekend, also called the “pignatta.”
The carnival has its preview in major events including the election of its queen who is crowned during a spectacular competition involving many amateur artists. The beauties candidates for queen parade wearing costumes born from the extravagant genius of the present designers. Another important event, for which all participants work throughout the year, is represented by the Carnival troupes.
Musical groups, extras, murgas, and rondallas rehearse their performances over and over so they can give their best during the long-awaited days of joy and fun. In the past, General Franco had banned the celebration of Carnival throughout Spain because its people indulged in all kinds of transgressions and euphoria, but the islanders of Tenerife managed to keep this tradition alive by transforming it into Winter Festivals. Considerable importance is also given to the carnival celebrated in the tourist town of Puerto de la Cruz. All residents and tourists present let themselves be carried away in wild dances and revelries of all kinds.
The traditional vintage car rally is an event not to be missed, as well as the fun “Mascherina mettiti i tacchi” race or the election of the drag queen. Particular emphasis must be given to the island’s cuisine, where the abundant and flavorful Atlantic fish reigns supreme.
The meats are also tasty and fine, the cheeses have a delicate and particular flavor, all seasoned with typical sauces made from local products, and the exotic fruit is rich and very tasty. The restaurants combine tradition and creativity at controlled costs. Not to be overlooked are the wines with an intense flavor due to the richness of the lands.
