The lively capital of Cuba, Havana, is also popular for its composite urban appearance characterized by the combination of the impressive decay of the center and the dazzling Hispanic colonial architecture of La Habana Vieja (Old Havana). Moving along the streets of Havana is possible with the most diverse means of transport: from the historic camellos (buses pulled by trucks, no longer used but “legendary” and therefore worth mentioning) and the guaguas (normal buses) to the colectivos (taxis with fixed routes).
The journey begins with La Habana Vieja, whose central point is the Plaza de Armas where you can admire many buildings in colonial style. Dominating the northeast side of the square is the church known as El Temple, whose peak is crowned by a statue of the Virgin of the Pillar (protector of sailors). Another side of the square, instead, is occupied by the Palace of the Captain General, which currently houses the Museo de la Ciudad.
Leaving the Plaza de Armas you can head towards the suggestive alleys (Calle Obispo, Mercaderes, San Ignacio, and Oficios) that branch out from here and on which old shops and ancient characteristic pharmacies face. Moving west along the Malecon seaside promenade, one can turn towards Centro Habana where the monument to General Maceo and the San Lazaro Tower are located.
Continuing along this route you reach El Vedado, Havana’s financial district dotted with ministries, banks, hotels, and lavish venues where you can enjoy local specialties such as daiquiri, much loved by Hemingway, to the rhythm of rumba. Continuing along the expansion of El Vedado you finally find yourself in Miramar characterized by many so-called casas particulares, or private houses whose rooms are rented to tourists (with a special license). This district is also frequented for its beaches, together with Marina Hemingway and the more eastern Playa del Este, El Mégano, Santa Maria del Mar, and Guanabo, where you can practice scuba diving and spearfishing.
Havana also welcomes tourists with a large number of interesting fortresses, squares, churches, and museums.
