From Bisentina Island, in Lake Bolsena to the Sabatini Mountains where Lake Bracciano is located. A naturalistic and pleasant journey in the land of Lazio.
First day
Bisentina Island, in Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic basin in Europe
Served by the Alto Lazio ferry company, the island is a triumph of rare and centuries-old vegetation: holm oaks, oaks, lindens, ancient olives, meadows, and crops. Among the greenery, there is also the Renaissance church of SS. Giacomo and Cristoforo, flanked by a beautiful Italian-style garden.
Back on the mainland, you can take the Via Cassia, which quickly leads to Lake Vico, the heart of the Cimini Mountains and home to a Nature Reserve covering 3346 hectares, with completely different environments: the lake with its reed beds, the wetland area; the hazelnut cultivations and, at higher elevations, chestnut trees, coppice, and mature forest, where several species of birds of prey also live. In several locations, “nature trails” have been set up, equipped areas for stops and picnics, and you can rent bicycles, canoes, and pedal boats.
