The Civic Museum of Bracciano is located inside the old convent of Santa Maria Novella, founded in the 15th century by the Augustinian friars. The building, restored between 1998 and 2003, also houses the Municipal Historical Archive. The objects and works of art on display illustrate the life of Bracciano over the centuries, from the earliest Etruscan settlements to the 19th century, and are organized into three sections: introductory, archaeological, and historical-artistic. The first section introduces the visitor to the museum and to the Community of Bracciano, understood as the institution from which the Town Hall would emerge. Here are maps and finds related to institutional life; particularly interesting are the objects formerly used by the councilors. In the archaeological section, part of the Panunzi collection is temporarily exhibited, which includes objects excavated in the territory of Bracciano dating from the Etruscan period to the early Christian era; the organization follows a chronological criterion. The historical-artistic section, organized by themes, contains various works: the room with the theme “The clientele and the artists” houses works made for the main local commissions, both public and private, by artists called to work in Bracciano or of Braccian origin. In the center of the room is the beautiful sculptural group by Cristoforo Stati (1556-1619), artist from Bracciano. In the room with the theme “Testimonies of sacred art” are exhibited objects, furniture, and liturgical ornaments from the nearby church of Santa Maria Novella, which was part of the convent. Of particular importance is the Christ Salvator Mundi, attributed to the circle of Andrea Bregno, dated to the late 15th century.
