Established as a Section of the State Archive of Sassari in 1959, it became the State Archive following the decree of the President of the Republic no. 1409 of 1963. The oldest core of the documentation consists of notarial collections that, starting from 1550 and throughout the nineteenth century, bear witness to the socio-economic history of the Nuoro area. A particularly significant source for the political history of Sardinia during the fascist era is the material deposited by the Prefecture and Police Headquarters of Nuoro, thousands of files covering the period 1894-1966. Substantial is also the nineteenth-century cartographic material. Of considerable interest within the bibliographic heritage of the Archive is the Pinna donation, which gathers 1500 titles, some rare and hard to find, as well as 25 maps of Sardinia dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.
