Established as a Section of the State Archive of Sassari in 1959, it became a State Archive following the decree of the President of the Republic no. 1409 of 1963. The ancient core of the documentation consists of notarial records which, starting from 1550 and until the entire nineteenth century, testify to the socio-economic history of the Nuoro area. A particularly important source for the political history of Sardinia during the fascist era is the material submitted by the Prefecture and Police Headquarters of Nuoro, thousands of files covering the period 1894-1966. The nineteenth-century cartographic material is also substantial. Of notable interest within the bibliographic heritage of the Archive is the Pinna donation, which gathers 1500 titles, some of which are rare and hard to find, as well as 25 maps of Sardinia dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.
