The Spada Collection was born from the passion of Dr. Francesco Spada, a hematologist doctor, antique and music enthusiast, who over a period of about twenty-five years acquired as many as 750 pieces, exploring flea markets and antique shops. The Collection, divided into fourteen families, has been studied, photographed, cataloged, and restored. In particular, an organological study has been conducted for each instrument, allowing the piece to be placed in a specific historical and geographical context while also considering the physical and textual characteristics regarding the materials used for construction and any subsequent interventions performed to alter its sound according to changing tastes over time. It is with this perspective, focused on respecting the authenticity of the instrument, that restoration operations and diagnostic techniques have been carried out. Another fundamental element that emerged during an important exhibition “Music Outside Theaters” is undoubtedly a thorough study of the instrument that led to the expression of intangible characteristics related to sound production and its contextualization within certain social spheres, hence the interesting empathy with the territory in a lively cultural and scientific exchange.
