The Museum was established in 1881 and is housed, together with the Provincial Library, in the Prefecture Palace. An initial cataloging of the materials was carried out by the archaeologist Antonio Sogliano, who published the Inventory in 1889. Since then, the Museum and the Library have experienced various vicissitudes and multiple relocations until 1995, when the Museum was set up in the rooms of Palazzo Mazzarotta. The Palace, dating back to the 16th century, was originally owned by a religious order or confraternity and became, in the 1700s, the residence of a wealthy family. Its history is reflected in the arrangement of the rooms, which reveals an uncoordinated succession of construction interventions where the loggia and the portal of clear 19th-century definition stand out.
Inside, the museum exhibition is divided into five sections (organized according to chronological and thematic criteria); the original 19th-century provincial collection, comprising about 500 pieces of various origin, is included in the path of the five sections:

I section: Along the Adriatic routes
– II section: The Amber Road
– III section: Gentes fortissimae Italiae
– IV section: From the Samnites to the Romans
– V section: The Avar Knights
