The Museum was founded in 1881 and is housed, together with the Provincial Library, in the Palazzo della Prefettura. A first cataloging of the material was carried out by the archaeologist Antonio Sogliano who published the Inventory in 1889. Since then the Museum and the Library have experienced alternating events and multiple changes of location until 1995, when the Museum was set up in the premises of Palazzo Mazzarotta. The Palace, dated to the 16th century, was initially owned by an order or a religious confraternity and became in the 1700s the residence of a wealthy family. Its history is reflected in the distribution of the rooms, which reveals a disorganized succession of building interventions in which the loggia and the portal of clear 19th-century definition stand out.
Inside, the museum exhibition is divided into five sections (organized according to a chronological and thematic criterion); the original 19th-century collection, the provincial one, including about 500 pieces from various origins, is included in the path of the five sections:

I section: Along the Adriatic routes
– II section: The amber route
– III section: Gentes fortissimae Italiae
– IV section: From the Samnites to the Romans
– V section: The avaricious knights
