The museum institution – which was once housed in the current town hall building – is located in a wing on the first floor of the former Dominican convent, today the “Zeffirino Rizzelli” Palace of Culture, which also hosts the rich library and the municipal historical archive. The museum’s founding, already advocated in 1913 by the scholar Cosimo De Giorgi, is credited to the initiative of Francesco Bardoscia, secretary of the local section of the P.N.F. The collection was inaugurated in 1936 at the first location with the exhibition of artifacts and works from the municipal heritage; the two most substantial and significant collections of the permanent collection are essentially two: the Cavoti collection (drawings, caricatures, collection of prints and engravings, notebooks and study notes, photographs), donated by the artist’s nephew in 1931, and the collection of works by the Galatina sculptor Gaetano Martinez (1882-1951), one of the leading southern Italian sculptors of the twentieth century.
