“The Diocesan Museum of Conversano was established on June 29, 2002, in the premises of the Monastery of St. Benedict, a famous and ancient nullius Benedictine abbey (9th century), initially male and later, with the arrival of the Cistercian Dameta Paleologo (1266), female until the Napoleonic suppression of 1810. The cenobitic complex, long a place of worship, with the church open daily for religious functions, and a cultural center housing the Archaeological Museum and the Monastery Library, is set within the splendid urban context of the ancient village of Conversano, a city once the seat of the Acquaviva d’Aragona Counts, episcopal seat of the diocese since the 10th century and famous for its mitred abbesses. The museum reflects the history of the territory through material evidence of the secular, ecclesiastical, and religious rulers of the city. Equally important is the experience and life of the people, who, with their customs and sayings, devotions, and saints, have transmitted a heritage—with intrinsic demo-ethno-anthropological value—to future generations.”
