About 2 km S-SW of Tuscania is the necropolis of Madonna dell’Olivo, named after the adjacent church of the same name. Although already active during the archaic Etruscan period, the necropolis is mainly renowned for the presence of tombs from the Hellenistic age (4th-1st century BC) arranged on multiple levels and sometimes featuring architectural facades and carved decorations. Particularly notable are the Queen’s Grotto, explored in the last century and connected by a system of tunnels of unclear significance, and the tombs of the Curunas family which, discovered between 1967 and 1970, yielded rich grave goods (4th-1st century BC) now exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Tuscania.
