Circa 2 km S-SW of Tuscania is the Madonna dell’Olivo necropolis, so named after the contiguous church of the same name. Although already active in the Etruscan archaic age, the notoriety of the necropolis is mainly due to the presence of tombs from the Hellenistic period (4th-1st century BC) arranged on various levels and sometimes with architectural facades and carved decorations. Particularly notable are the Queen’s Grotto, explored last century and connected with a system of tunnels of unclear meaning, and the tombs of the Curunas family which, discovered between 1967 and 1970, yielded rich grave goods (4th-1st century BC) now displayed at the Archaeological Museum of Tuscania.
